THE 2009 WHALING-SPARROW BI-STATE JUNIOR GOLF TOUNAMENT
IThe 8th annual Whaling/Sparrow Bi-State challenge between Pennsylvania and Ohio was held at Windmill Lakes Golf Club, Ravenna, Ohio on August 3rd and 4th, 2009.
The Bi-State Junior Golf Challenge trophy, the Alan Whaling-Lois Sparrow Cup, was named in honor of an individual from each state who epitomized encouragement and support for young men and women who love golf as they did. Their love of golf and support of the public golf system has made this type of event possible.
Play began Monday morning with tee times starting at 7:28 AM, with play using the four- ball format. The morning matches ended with Pennsylvania holding a 4 ½ to 31/2 edge. The afternoon format was the alternate-shot matches with Pennsylvania winning 6 of the 8 matches. The first day ended with Pennsylvania holding a 10 ½ to 5 ½ point advantage. The second day of play was the 16 singles matches. With Pennsylvania holding a 5 point advantage going into the singles matches, they only needed to gain 5 ½ points to retain the cup for another year. The team ended up winning 8 of the singles matches. The final score was PA 18 ½ and Ohio 13 ½. The BI-State Challenge now stands at PA 4 wins and OH 3 wins, with 1 tie. The tournament has continued to showcase some of the best junior golfers in the states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. This year the tournament had several college golf coaches in attendance scouting for possible members of their teams.
The following golfers will not be able to play in the BI-State next year because of age restrictions: Jenna Rinker, Patrick Fritz, Matt Vogt, Andrew Edwards, Brandon and Brock Pompeani.
